AP keeps proportions locked as long as you scale only one layer (using the handles). Pressing shift unlocks the constraint. Fine so far.

As soon as you selct more than one layer, the behavior is inverted. You have to press shift to keep the proportions.

Can't be intended, is it?

Hi maxen,

This is by design. The reason for this is because for objects with an intrinsic aspect ratio, like text and images, you probably won't want to change their proportions most of the time and so there's no need to press any modifier key, for the rest (including groups) there's no reason to constrain them by default so you only press a modifier when you do want to keep its proportions. In any case you can change this in the Preferences. Go to Affinity Designer/Photo  Preferences, Tools section and select the behaviour you want from the Move Tool Aspect Constrain drop down:

  • The Automatic option will constrain the resize depending on the type of object selected. For objects with an intrinsic aspect ratio (like images or text frames) the proportion will be kept when you resize them. For the others, it will not (you must press ⇧ (shift) to keep their proportions. This option is selected by default.
  • Constrain by default will resize objects proportionally no matter what's their type.  You will have to press ⇧ (shift) to override the constrain.
  • Do no constrain by default will not constrain be default and will force you to press ⇧ (shift) to resize objects proportionally independently of their type.

Does this

Hi maxen,

Is this why I am noticing in both Photo and Designer that Shift and ALT swap depending on how many layers you are trying to resize? Due to the auto ratio constraint being on by default? It's an old Adobe habit I have of constantly holding shift while moving things, I guess I need to get used to it. Now that you mentioned it I see I don't have to hold shift, which is what kept messing me up haha
