Anybody know what I might be doing wrong here? (Scrolling Background Tutorial)

Recommended Posts

So I've been playing with Designer for the last week or so and I'm totally loving it...  I'm basically a total beginner...  I do have CS5 on an older machine but that usually ended in tears of frustration - but Designer for me so far has been truly a joy...   :)

I'm following along with a tutorial I found online: How to Create a Scrolling Background in Affinity Designer:

https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-scrolling-background-in-affinity-designer--cms-25612

I can get to step 4 but when I go to merge (with the add button) the darkest areas of the ground together, the left half changes color on me...  I took some screenshots so you can see what I'm talking about...  Im attaching them as files because I don't feel like uploading them to Imgur or something at the moment...  Someone please let me know if you need me to do something different in order for you to see...  Im not the most technical type person...

I've tried moving my curves closer before the merge, moving some of the pebbles in the left half further away from the stroke, performing the action with mode button and select button highlighted, prayers, cussing, moving things around and grouping things in the layers panel...  I've tried merging different elements from the two paths (the lighter ground colors) and the same thing happens... the left half seems to take on the color of the shape above it...  I fear its something in the layers panel but thats just my gut...  I have no idea whats going on...

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...

Any thoughts or advice would be truly appreciated...

Thx

I figured it out...  I didn't realize I needed to take the elements I was trying to merge out of their respective masking halves before trying to merge them...  I learned a lot, so overall, I consider the follow along a success...

So many of the questions I've been googling lead me to this forum...  I've been finding a lot of the answers to my questions here...  Id like to thank everyone for that...

So thanks...
