Yet Another Big File Size Problem

Recommended Posts

...Yes, another post about big file sizes. But wanted to go directly with examples.

Based in other posts, I made sure the saving with history is disabled, and the assistant in develop persona was also disabled. I'm running latest version on Mac.

This are the steps taken to generate de files...

1- Take a nice picuture in RAW (nikon)

2- Open de file in Photoshop CC, Open image without changes, and Save (*-PS Save.psd)

3- Export immediately as PNG, bilinear, (*-PS Export.png)

4- Open file in Affinity Photo, Develop without changes, and Save As (*-AF Save.afphoto)

5- Export immediately as PNG-24 bilinear, (*-AF Export.png)

6- Export immediatelu as PSD preserver accuracy (*-AF Export.psd)

Raw nef, 28.2 mb

PS psd, 69.1 mb

PS png, 28.3 mb

AF afphoto, 186 mb

AF png, 104.4 mb

AF psd, 146 mb

File sizes are too big, it not only affects storage, but also preview, loading, saving and culling time. The feeling of frustration every time I hit save is very odd.

Would someone provide steps to "flatten" the file before saving in order to have the lowest possible file size?, preferible within the same range at its PS counterpart

We really need an option to save optimized !!

Sample files are shared in this Dropbox folder https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0bd242wlgkv23wt/AAAZH6o45g3_df5WZJPtKgL2a?dl=0

Hi and welcome,

hmm looks somehow like that AP might have embedded too much overhead here. - Which RAW engine did you used, Affinity's own dcraw based or the MacOS one instead?

BTW using your NEF in AD instead of AP gives ...

AD afdesign, 28.4 mb

AD png, 110.7 mb

AD psd, 146 mb (the same size as AP)

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

I've used Serif  RAW engine. Tried the apple and produced an even bigger file.

Based on your test, I went further and results are interesting....

1- Open de NEF in Affinity Designer ( .NEF 28.2 mb)

2- Save as .afdesign (.afdesign 28.4 mb)

3- In AD go to File/Edit in Photo

4- Save in AF (.afphoto 28.4 mb)  (great size!)

5- Do some color and contrast corrections in AF

6- Save in AF (.afphoto 158.2 mb) Back to huge files

The serif team should compare the .afphoto file in step 4, with the original .afphoto of my first post and idenfity what overhed is added

Sorry Affinity team. This simple design error is making my life impossible. Wanted to support new alternatives to Photoshop, but this and sub par other features (like mesh, develop corrections, previos comparison, etc) productivity is severely impacted.

I'm asking apple for a refund.
